Emphasizing the concept of victory: It depicts soldiers who have weapons and armor and Naram-sin is stepping on his dead enemies. The image that is most effective is the Triumph of Shapur I because it is larger and virtually and theoretically unmovable. The Victory Stele of Naram-sin is larger than an average human but the Triumph of Shapur I relief can look threateningly large when close to it. While the Victory Stele of Naram-sin is portable (proven when it was stolen by the Elamites), the relief of the Triumph of Shapur I was cut from a massive rock-face that would be impractical to even try to move.

Essay Essay Topic: A Farewell to Arms The film presents itself with Billy Budd as a sailor on a ship called the, Rights of Man. A ship from the British Navy is chasing them down as they correctly suspect, to impress men aboard theyre ship to become part of the navy. As we see on the ship, Billy Budd is a very lively, happy character that made everyone happy by singing through his tiring work. Budd is forced upon the HS Avenger where the crew is an unhappy, grumpy lot. Their unhappiness is due mostly to the master at arms, John Claggart. However, Budds jubilant personality brought light and warmth to an otherwise gloomy and cold ship. Budd proceeds to innocently try and become friends with Claggart. Claggart does not trust humans and he thinks that all men are out to get each other. He believe that he had to punish them before they get to him. Budds attempts fail though, and Claggart still treats him horribly and with bitterness. Shortly after, Claggart catches wind of a plot to end his own life, he brings it to the captain and accuses Budd of being the leader in this conspiracy. It seems however, that Claggart is really threatened by Budds apparent talent at making friends and ability to attract people to follow him, causing him to think he could start a mutiny. Mutinys in the year 1797 were a major concern in the British Navy and punishments to any involved were always severe if not the end of their lives. The captain calls both Claggart and Budd to his cabin for questioning. Claggart commences in spewing lies and accusations about Budd. Before Claggart can finish this, Budd, in a fit of anger and loss of words, hits Claggart and kills him with a single blow. This causes a problem for the ships captain, Captain Vere, (meaning truth). He personally did not like Claggart and he understands that Budd had no intention, but he feels that the only just thing to do would be to hang Billy Budd. He assembles a court marshal and they consult about what to do. Vere cannot decide whether to follow his own personal feelings or whether to follow his duty. In the end, they decide that the just thing to do would be to hang Billy Budd. Surprisingly, Budd is very content and does not fight the decision, for he understands what he has done. When Budd goes to be hanged before the crew, they voice their unhappiness, but none step forward to fight for his life. Billy Budd dies in front of the crew peacefully and without last words. Portrayal of the Legal System: This film brings up issues pertaining to Capital Punishment. It seems like an unfavorable portrayal of it, since Budd is such a likeable character. The film makes Claggart seem like a criminal for all the suffering and horrible things he makes the crew got through. But one could argue that he is just fulfilling his duty. The film makes Budd look like a hero, because he makes everyone happy through trying times. The way the Captain handles it is a very realistic approach to the situation. Just like in hammurabis Code, the famous Eye for an Eye, stands true in this. The legal system is presented in a few ways. The master of arms, Claggart is almost like the police. He watches the crew and enforces the laws of the ship. If a law is broken by one of the crew, then he reports it to the Captain who then will decide a punishment for the man. A judge and jury could be compared to the questioning from the captain and then the court marshal where they decide what should be done with Budd. The punishments would be done aboard ship. The crew cannot defend themselves really; their word is not taken as heavily as that of the Master at Arms. Relationship between Legal System and the Individual/Society: The main relationship that was portrayed in this movie was that between Claggart and Billy. This was an obviously strained relationship. Billy was very open to a friendship with Claggart, but Claggart would not have it and deemed it to be impossible. Since Claggart is the legal system, and Billy is the individual this represents one relationship. Another relationship that is key is the relationship between Captain Verre and the code. Captain Verre would like to forgive Billy and to let him go and not press charges, but the code says that Billy should die. This poses a conflict between Verres moral and lawful values. Should he kill Budd as the law tells him to? Or should he let it pass, because he knows Billy is a good person and it was accidental? The Issue/Conflict: The issue/conflict arose when Billy boarded the ship. His jubilant manner contradicted how the master at arms felt sailors should be. He took this attitude as a threat to the order of the ship. He saw Billy as the type of person who would start a mutiny. Claggart felt that Billy was up to something, especially when he attempted being friends with him. It created division, because Claggart cannot trust anyone and thinks Billy Is bad news. It created division, because everything Billy does to make the crew happy, Claggart sees as it as an attempt to turn their backs on the rules and persuade them to do the wrong. The second, more important issue is that of Verre and his decision. It arose through the killing of Claggart and from deciding what Billys punishment should be. Side A says that it is the Captains duty to kill Billy according to the rules and the law. The captain also takes into account the life lost; that although Claggart was a gloomy person, he had the right to live and tha t right was taken away when Billy killed him. Side B would argue that Billy did it by accident and that it was not a malicious kill. Chances are, Billy would not kill again. There is also the chance that people will mutiny if Billy dies. These are the thoughts that run through the Captains mind when he ponders Billys future. The conflict ends with Bills execution through hanging. The Captain deduces that the right choice to make is to kill Billy according to the law, and Billy accepts that. Despite the crews disapproval of the action, the captain has to go through with it. Billy also is very content with the Captains decision, because he understands what he killed a man and that that is a capital punishment. Billy does not hold any bad feelings for feel bitter, because he feels bad about Claggarts death as well. The Message and the Subtext: (I was not clear whether you were referring to the time the book was made, or the time the movie was made) The book was started in 1886 by Herman Melville. During that time Capital Punishment might have been a controversy. This was probably a reflection upon the army and the issue of a persons rights. The army was much more strict in the 1800s than it is not and brutal punishment was not unheard of. However, I suspect that this is not related to the army and just that of how someone should be judged. I think Herman Melvilles intention was to show the conflict between duty and morals. In 1962 this movie was probably related more to the army. In 1967 the United States was in a cold was with Russia and many troops were being deployed through out the world to protect countries. Many men were being court marshaled and many people were being investigated for conspiracy, since it was a largely unpopular war to be in. It probably brought up the issue of killing the enemy. Technically for killing someone, you should die or be severely punished. Even if he/she is the enemy like Claggart, do they have the same rights that we have? This is the type of question that people in the army had to face and had to live through. The Movie, its Message, and You: To me, Billy Budd explored the idea that even though you are not a bad person, you can still be punished for a crime you committed according to the law. This film taught me that many courts are unforgiving and would never forgive a random outburst of anger. This both calms me, and frightens me. It calms me because that means that people, who kill and dont mean to or dont understand their strength and ways, are being put into jail far away from me. But it also frightens me, to think that what if it happened to me and no one is merciful? It also gets me thinking about capital punishment and where it should be applied. Such as, under what circumstances does a person have to kill for their life to be taken away? What type of mental state do they need to have? Does it matter? It arose issues such as this and I left class the last of filming thinking about all of this. I think that this is a semi-accurate portrayal of the legal system. Semi-accurate, because today we have a jury, we have many people who would have defended Billy and others to defend Claggart. Or maybe there would have been a person to defend Jenkins when Claggart ordered him to his post, which led to his death. The portrayal of someone enforcing the law and some sort of court is very accurate though. The court marshal acts as the judge and the jury. The captain calls both men in for questioning before Billy kills Claggart. This is all accurate to how thinks would be help today. Ultimately, they decided to obey the law and kill Billy. However, the issue of Capital Punishment was different throughout all ages. Back in the 1800s there might not have ever been an argument about it, and people rarely questioned the law. It was just a clear yes, he deserves to die or no, he did not commit the crime. Now, people have become more passionate and we understand that there are certain circumst antial and rightful killings. Such as, killing to defend one self. I dont think Billy would be let go completely free. Most likely, they would give him 25 to life now. I think the argument is universally a problem and it always will be. There will always be side A and B who will lock heads and argue whether this punishment is humane or just. Watching this movie in class, it was not terribly exciting, but looking back on all the movies Ive watching in school it was not the worst. I liked the character Billy a lot and how he was cheerful through everything. I thought that generally, the acting was good since bad acting is a pet peeve of mine. What I did not like was the fact that it was in black and white. I really love color to catch my eye and the fact that every color was some variation of a mixture of black and white really annoyed me. The only other thing I can think of was that in man cases, I could not understand what they were saying. Thank god, you deciphered it. Over all, Im sure that if I saw the movie in theaters in 1962 I would have thoughts I got my moneys worth. Billy Budd taught us more than the law though. During the time Billy was aboard this Miserable ship Avenger, he always kept a positive attitude and took the cup half full, approach to any situation. That teaches me that maybe school isnt that bad and maybe I should take things from a different angle instead of seeing all the work involved. I also learned to accept whats for me and what you cant help. Such as this paper, at first I was very reluctant to start a 13-paragraph essay. Thats pretty daunting, but as I rounded my 5th paragraph I knew that I had to do this. This is acceptance, not to the same greatness and peacefulness ad Billys, but still getting there. The third lesson I took from Billy Budd is not to kill someone., because there are always consequences for your actions. Not that I ever considered killing someone, but I mean that it made a big impression on me that in the real world, hey dont care is you have a problem getting the words out so you just punch. There are no s econd chances. So, with me on the road I realize that there is no saying whoops sorry, wont happen again. Theres saying, Please dont tell my parents I got arrested. Its kind of a slap in the face that bad things happen to good people, and good people do bad things to make that true.

The more fibrous materials have more absorption; oppositely the denser materials are less absorption. By using the absorption materials in the studio, it can minimize the reflections while the recording going and it can also prevent the standing waves and flutter echoes. By using acoustic treatment we can deaden one half of the room whilst keeping the other half reflective. Absorption can become very useful when tuned to a specific frequency. In general, low frequencies are very difficult to absorb because of their long wavelength, on the contrary, high frequencies are easily absorbed by less complicated structures, The reduction of high frequencies in a critical musical environment is essential for the reduction of flutter echoes. Products like bass traps are absorbing devices specifically designed to absorb the low frequency energy. The good bass trap is the combination of the hard, soft, thin materials. This brings a problem, CELL PHONES in school. Cell phones should not be allowed in school. Cell phone has a harmful effect on teenagers. Student at high school should not be allowed with cell phones due to certain circumstances. There are many disadvantages derived from the uses of cell phones by high school students. Although cell phones are great they need to be banned from schools. Society has come to a point where the idea of living without cell phones seems absurd that they can’t be without cell phone. The usage of mobile phones has provided evidence of them being used for both positive purposes and negative reasons. Student’s desire cell phones in order to sustain contact with friends, but the parents of students wants their children to have cell phones with them for security purposes. But talking about security the students can also be in danger, and also affecting them in their studies? Cell phones carry multiple benefits, but with this technology lies a dualism that goes precariously between the benefits and negative effects of cell phone usage especially with students. In the case of school emergencies, cell phones can prove more of a hindrance than a help. Cell phones have been used to call in bomb threats. Tracking a cell phone is not easily done. Also, students use of cell phones in a school emergency can possibly trigger a real bomb if an explosive device is on the schools property. Students are affected because instead they learn they are copying, texting in class, receiving calls during class, they are being distracted. Cell Phones should not be allowed in High School. Although mobile phones have taken over society, they have been around for several decades. In the late 1940 they discovered that the technology that would be used for cell phones, created and the idea of a mobile phone was introduced. The first mobile phones, referred to as First Generation or 1G, were introduced to the public market in 1983. However, the 1G cell phone was the size of a large briefcase and very inconvenient and uncomfortable but people did not care. During the 1990s, there was a great improvement made in the mobile phone technology. These phones used Second Generation, or 2G technology. The Second Generation cellular phone technology was much faster and much quieter than its analog predecessor. This new technology also made the cell phones capable of being smaller rather than the large briefcase-sized from the 1980s. In today’s society the cell phone has not only help us in communication but also as a treat to our students. The cell phone is now a huge distraction to our students in the class room and even causing accidents on the high way due to lack of attention. Teenagers and cell phones they seem to be inseparable these days. For example when you go to the mall or places that you could find students it is hard to grasp their attention due to the fact that they are either talking on the phone or text messaging each other. Cell phones and school may not be a good combination, although they are helpful in communication, but why would someone need to be in a conversation while at school? Why not use the school community phone? We have seen that cell phones are helpful but they need to be banned from school. Students use Cell phones to cheat in school and are not learning. Cell phones enable students to take a picture of tests and answers. Cell phones are good for an emergency but it also has its bad part. If there is an emergency at the school, students may not pass along correct information rather giving wrong information. Also there are school phones that can be used for terrorism, as for call for bomb threats and explosions. It has the potential to detonate real bombs with their signals and can explode and kill the entire school. There is distraction in class in which other students are not learning because they are texting, answering calls, and calling. This also affects the students because they are not grasping what the teacher is lecturing and because of short like abbreviation they are failing test and exams. Students tend to download nudity stuff and forward it to friends (some they don’t like it because it causes a problem). Cell phones are affecting the students in their academic performance and teenagers have become addicted to it. Students are rather cheating than studying. Since cheating has become such a large threat in schools with the expanding use of the internet and the availability of so many resources, cell phones can easily be used to pass on information to other students. Students can send test pictures, answers or even websites where they can find the work. This is not fair because as some students struggle to study some are just copying. Although they are copying they don’t know that they are the ones who will suffer the consequences. Students, who are receiving higher grades through cheating, make it far more difficult for other students who are truly putting their best effort. Students are not learning if they are using the phone to cheat. Despite the admission of cell phones being used by students for emergencies, this is no excuse. If something is urgent and the student take its phone to school, Then that student is responsible to put his/her cell phone on silence and have the opportunity to get up and go outside without distracting the other students who are interesting in school work. If the student has an emergency, don’t you think that they should discuss the problem with the school counselor? Plus if they need to call this can easily be achieved by phoning their parents directly from school. Cell phones are distraction in class when learning is taken place. Many schools in higher crime areas began banning cell phones long time, due to the business of illegal drugs and other gang-related activities. Students can be able to order and use illegal drugs during school hours and could have them delivered right to the school before the end of the day. This made it more convenient for the children because they are at school and away from the prying eyes of their parent. In the case of bomb threats at school, the threat itself was probably called into the school on a cell phone because of these devices; they cannot be traced by law enforcement officials. In other words to trace a bomb in a cell phone is difficult and to evacuate an entire school it’s kind of hard. While most of these threats turn out to be hoaxes, a real bomb could possibly be detonated by cell phone usage. Also if the teenagers take phones to school, not every student will remember to put his/her phone on vibration, this can leads to classes interruption by the occasionally ring tones which leads in annoying the teacher and interrupt the class and plus the other students who want to learn. Yes they will receive texts from their parents and to see if they are okay but, if students put the phone on vibrate it also interrupt the class, why? Because there are different models of phones and for each one, the vibrations are somehow loud and also interrupt the class. If students also take phones to school and if there is a call the students will want to know from whom the call is coming from and will cause distraction to the class, to him and this would be disrespect to the lecturer. It will be disrespect because the lecturer is teaching and you won’t be paying any attention than to your phone. This will cause the student with the phone to lose focus and valuable information being lectured by the teacher. Cell phone makes students to practice and engaging in criminal activities, which lead them to have less time for school work causing the school and students to be both involved and being affected. . High school student are achieving poorly in terms of their academic records and in some major subject. Students are spending more time on cell phones than on their school work. This makes them to achieve poorly at school because their focus is on phones. Moreover, students with cell phones are not able to maintain good writing skills because if the result of short like abbreviated words used in texting. During formal writings as in a exam or test, they are below grade level because they use the words that they practice when they send texts messages to friends or relatives. In this case like this students are struggling to get a good grade better than a 70% in writing. It is the view that most student send messages are in short like abbreviated. Against that is the view that student are not able to maintain good writing skills is the result of short like abbreviated words used during texting. Students get accustom in using short like abbreviation and when writing school work it affects them because it is improper English causing them to fail. This will also affect the student in the future, when they are applying for a job or trying to write a letter to their boss for a sickness or job application letter. This will show that you are not capable to do this type of job. This is caused because students are now using short like abbreviation. Students can do research through their phones in the internet and do not need to use a computer but, while using the internet the student might be texting, which is a big distraction because although they don’t see the other students is looking at him, he is also distracted. School administrators do not approve cell phone because they are in school and because what literally student’s go is to learn. Students can take pictures in the locker room and putting them in the Internet, this will bring problems to the school and the student. problem these days with texting (sending nude or pornographic sex messages) in the schools. Students can become distracted during class by trying to download and texting one another instead of listening to the instructor. Students tend to be downloading music and pornographic videos which also cause distraction. Not only pornographic stuff, but also sending answers to those students who have not students, then the students are not learning nor studying. Cell phone is affecting students in one way or another. Conclusion As the argument between if cell phones should be or should be not accepted in school, school officials and concerned parents are revising this issue. Some school administrators have made suggestions that students keep their cell phones in school but have it turn it off. Officers and some parents have some doubt about this because even though the students have their cell phones turn off, it doesn’t matter if they will have it in vibration there will be distraction of class, If they have the phone of course students will turn on the phone. Every time he/she have a call they will want to see from whom it is, that is already disruption of class. The benefit of mobile phones is instant communication but one thing, this is totally unnecessary in a classrooms. In addition cell phones will cause distraction and secondary problems that will lead the student to drop out of school.

A Brief History of the Microscope During that historic period known as the Renaissance, after the dark Middle Ages, there occurred the inventions of printing, gunpowder and the mariners compass, followed by the discovery of America. Equally remarkable was the invention of the light microscope: an instrument that enables the human eye, by means of a lens or combinations of lenses, to observe enlarged images of tiny objects. It made visible the fascinating details of worlds within worlds. Invention of Glass Lenses Long before, in the hazy unrecorded past, someone picked up a piece of transparent crystal thicker in the middle than at the edges, looked through it, and discovered that it made things look larger. Someone also found that such a crystal would focus the suns rays and set fire to a piece of parchment or cloth. Magnifiers and burning glasses or magnifying glasses are mentioned in the writings of Seneca and Pliny the Elder, Roman philosophers during the first century A. D., but apparently they were not used much until the invention of spectacles, toward the end of the 13th century. They were named lenses because they are shaped like the seeds of a lentil. The earliest simple microscope was merely a tube with a plate for the object at one end and, at the other, a lens which gave a magnification less than ten diameters ten times the actual size. These excited general wonder when used to view fleas or tiny creeping things and so were dubbed flea glasses. Birth of the Light Microscope About 1590, two Dutch spectacle makers, Zaccharias Janssen and his son Hans, while experimenting with several lenses in a tube, discovered that nearby objects appeared greatly enlarged. That was the forerunner of the compound microscope and of the telescope. In 1609, Galileo, father of modern physics and astronomy, heard of these early experiments, worked out the principles of lenses, and made a much better instrument with a focusing device. Anton van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723) The father of microscopy, Anton van Leeuwenhoek of Holland, started as an apprentice in a dry goods store where magnifying glasses were used to count the threads in cloth. He taught himself new methods for grinding and polishing tiny lenses of great curvature which gave magnifications up to 270 diameters, the finest known at that time. These led to the building of his microscopes and the biological discoveries for which he is famous. He was the first to see and describe bacteria, yeast plants, the teeming life in a drop of water, and the circulation of blood corpuscles in capillaries. During a long life, he used his lenses to make pioneer studies on an extraordinary variety of things, both living and non-living and reported his findings in over a hundred letters to the Royal Society of England and the French Academy. Robert Hooke Robert Hooke, the English father of microscopy, re-confirmed Anton van Leeuwenhoeks discoveries of the existence of tiny living organisms in a drop of water. Hooke made a copy of Leeuwenhoeks light microscope and then improved upon his design. Charles A. Spencer Later, few major improvements were made until the middle of the 19th century. Then several European countries began to manufacture fine optical equipment but none finer than the marvelous instruments built by the American, Charles A. Spencer, and the industry he founded. Present day instruments, changed but little, give magnifications up to 1250 diameters with ordinary light and up to 5000 with blue light. Beyond the Light Microscope A light microscope, even one with perfect lenses and perfect illumination, simply cannot be used to distinguish objects that are smaller than half the wavelength of light. White light has an average wavelength of 0.55 micrometers, half of which is 0.275 micrometers. (One micrometer is a thousandth of a millimeter, and there are about 25,000 micrometers to an inch. Micrometers are also called microns.) Any two lines that are closer together than 0.275 micrometers will be seen as a single line, and any object with a diameter smaller than 0.275 micrometers will be invisible or, at best, show up as a blur. To see tiny particles under a microscope, scientists must bypass light altogether and use a different sort of illumination, one with a shorter wavelength. The Electron Microscope The introduction of the electron microscope in the 1930s filled the bill. Co-invented by Germans, Max Knoll, and Ernst Ruska in 1931, Ernst Ruska was awarded half of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1986 for his invention. (The other half of the Nobel Prize was divided between Heinrich Rohrer and Gerd Binnig for the STM.) In this kind of microscope, electrons are speeded up in a vacuum until their wavelength is extremely short, only one hundred-thousandth that of white light. Beams of these fast-moving electrons are focused on a cell sample and are absorbed or scattered by the cells parts so as to form an image on an electron-sensitive photographic plate. Power of the Electron Microscope If pushed to the limit, electron microscopes can make it possible to view objects as small as the diameter of an atom. Most electron microscopes used to study biological material can see down to about 10 angstromsan incredible feat, for although this does not make atoms visible, it does allow researchers to distinguish individual molecules of biological importance. In effect, it can magnify objects up to 1 million times. Nevertheless, all electron microscopes suffer from a serious drawback. Since no living specimen can survive under their high vacuum, they cannot show the ever-changing movements that characterize a living cell. Light Microscope Vs Electron Microscope Using an instrument the size of his palm, Anton van Leeuwenhoek was able to study the movements of one-celled organisms. Modern descendants of van Leeuwenhoeks light microscope can be over 6 feet tall, but they continue to be indispensable to cell biologists because, unlike electron microscopes, light microscopes enable the user to see living cells in action. The primary challenge for light microscopists since van Leeuwenhoeks time has been to enhance the contrast between pale cells and their paler surroundings so that cell structures and movement can be seen more easily. To do this they have devised ingenious strategies involving video cameras, polarized light, digitizing computers, and other techniques that are yielding vast improvements, in contrast, fueling a renaissance in light microscopy.
